Resources for minors and adults in the UK.

Minors:

  • You can get a referral from your GP to an NHS therapist.

  • You can get therapy online, but this does cost money.

  • Tavistock are one of the few gender clinics that work with young people 17 or under to help them explore their gender identity.

  • Gendered Intelligence - Gendered Intelligence operates youth groups in London and Leeds for young trans people, as well as non-binary and questioning young people aged under 21.

  • 2bu Somerset – They offer advice and support for LGBTQ+ young people living in Somerset. They have a central youth support group in Taunton which meets every Wednesday between 6-8pm for young people (aged 13-18).

  • The Lowdown Northampton - A voluntary mental health charity, providing free and confidential counselling, emotional wellbeing, sexual health and LGBTQ support services for 11-25 year olds.

  • The Wild Mind Programme – Hounslow, Richmond, Kingston - The Wild Mind Programme offers support to young LGBTQ+ people who are experiencing anxiety, depression or any other mental health issues. They do this by offering outdoor creative activities.

  • The Mix – They have an online community where you can talk to other young people anonymously through their message boards.

  • The Beaumont Society – They offer a 24/7 information line, who can help you find the best resources for you. Their number is 01582 412220.

  • Mermaids – Are a support group for trans people aged 19 or below. Their information line is open Monday to Saturday from 3pm to 7pm and their number is 0344 334 0550.

  • LGBT Youth Scotland – They help young people in Scotland through the use of forums, a text service, and a live chat service for anyone who’s currently struggling with trans issues. They also have a leaflet about coming out as trans.

  • The Albert Kennedy Trust - They support LGBT+ people aged 16-25-years-old who are homeless or living in a hostile environment. AKT has offices in London (call on 020 7831 6562), Manchester (0161 228 3308) and Newcastle (0191 281 0099).

  • Stonewall Youth website – They offer useful advice and information. If you need to talk to someone, you can also call the Stonewall information service on 08000 50 20 20.

  • The Proud Trust – Are a charity who support LGBT+ youth, with lots of help and advice for young people throughout their website.

  • The Be You Project – Is where I found some of the above resources, and they have their own resources page, too.

Adults:

  • Switchboard – They have a helpline to connect you to the right LGBT+ services.

  • TransUnite – Can connect you to local support groups in the UK.

  • The Beaumont Society – Offers help and support from the trans community.

  • The Clare Project – Trans support and social group based in Brighton and Hove, but they are open to anyone wishing to explore issues around gender identity.

  • Gendered Intelligence – Trans-led charity that aims to improve the lives of trans and non-binary people in the UK, specialises in supporting young people.

  • GIRES – Gender identity research & education.

  • LGBT Foundation – National charity based in Manchester with trans services and resources.

  • Mindline trans + – Emotional and mental health support helpline for anyone on the gender spectrum, and their families, friends, colleagues and carers. Their phone line is open Mondays and Fridays, 8pm to midnight on 0300 330 5468.

  • Stonewall – UK charity campaigning for LGBT equality.

  • Switchboard – LGBT+ helpline.

  • THT Direct – Terrence Higgins Trusts’ phone and email service for questions about sexual health or living with HIV.

  • Transbucket – Healthcare and surgery resource for the trans community.

  • WPATH – Non-profit organisation devoted to trans health.
